Introduction
The Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS) is a unique University of its kind in India, originally established as an University in 1967, as result of the discussion held between Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama with a view to educating the youths of Tibet and the Himalayan border region.

The University while initially functioning as a constituent wing of the Sampurnananda Sanskrit University, Varanasi, became an autonomous body in 1977 under the then Department of Culture, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The Government of India recognised the unique way of functioning and the excellence achieved by the University and conferred the status of a University upon the University, on the recommendation made by the University Grants Commission, under the section 3 of the UGC act, on the 5th of April 1988. The University made further progress under the able leadership of Ven. Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, Vice Chancellor of the University, now the Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government in Exile. The University is currently headed by Prof. Geshe Ngawang Samten, Vice Chancellor, supported by learned faculty members of the University in achieving its goal of excellence in the field of Tibetology, Buddhology and Himalayan Studies.
