About Birla Institute of Technology (BIT Mesra)
The originator of BIT (Birla Institute of Technology) was Late Shri B. M. Birla. In the late sixties, he realized the unemployment has taken a great shape in the country for young engineers. BIT is located 16 Km away from Ranchi (Jharkhand). The prime location of coal mines and steel industries like Heavy Engineering Corporation. After realizing the importance of technological institutions in the country, BIT initiated department of industrial Research in the year 1964.

The aim of this department is to identify areas of research and to develop commercial products with proficiency of the staff keeping in mind the interest and requirement of steel or other heavy industries. Since market was small, large industries were not interested to use developed products and the developed product was out of reach for the small firms. Hence, BIT decided to build a small industry, which would run by BIT competent graduates. Since the scheme was a big project so they approached to its sister concern BISR (Birla Institute of Scientific and Research) for the monetary support and assistance to establishing facilities, equipment and for the purpose of motivating and guiding technical graduates in order to built small industry based on BIT technological development. In this way SIRDO, (Small Industries Research and Development Organization came into existence in the year 1970.

Taking lessons of success from these small industries many commercial banks agreed to finance small industry and they believe if managed properly small industry can also compete with large industry. Later in the year 1978, Government of Bihar appreciated that scheme, decided to provide financial assistance, and registered SIRTDO as an independent society. It also receives support from British Council and the intermediate Technology Development of United Kingdom. Government of India also appreciated the idea of generating employment through small-scale industries. During 1985-86, IDBI provided financial assistance of Rs. 1.43 Crore to BIT.
