TRAINEE MARINE ENGINEER

As a National Carrier and country’s premier shipping line, The Shipping Corporation of India owns and operates around one-third of the Indian tonnage, and has operating interests in practically all areas of the shipping business; servicing both national and international trades.

In view of the demand from Indian trade, the SCI has diversified into a large number of areas. The SCI is today the only Indian shipping Company operating Tankers, Product Carriers, International container services, Liquid/dry bulk services, LPG & LNG, Offshore services, Passenger services. In addition, the SCI mans and manages a large number of vessels on behalf of various government departments and organizations.

As a profitable commercial venture of the Government of India, the SCI has an excellent track record of profitability since its inception. The SCI’s annual performance has consecutively been rated excellent for a record 18 times, under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Government of India. Also The Government of India has conferred “Navratna” status to SCI.

Qualification:
Degree in Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture from AICTE Approved Engineering college. Equivalent degree or degree with specialization or electives are not acceptable. Final year / semester students who appeared in the exam and expect their results by 31.07.2011 may also apply. Candidates must be in possession of valid degree in Engineering certificate with minimum 50% marks in final year of Engineering at the time of interview and should have secured at least 50% marks in English language at Xth or XIIth.

Age Limit:
Maximum 28 years as on 1st January 2012. Candidate must be born on or after 01.01.1984. Relaxations applicable to SC/ST candidate as per existing Govt.directives. Age relaxation of two years for women candidates.

Medical Standard :
Candidate must have good health and are to be fit for sea service as per existing MS Medical rules 2000 applicable to sea farers.

Merchantile Marine Personality Evaluation Test (MMPE):
Candidate should pass Mercantile Marine Personality Evaluation Test (MMPE), to be conducted at D. G. Shipping nominated centres i.e. M.T.I. & L.B.S.CAMSAR Mumbai, MERI Kolkata, NIPM Chennai MMD Kochi and MMD Noida.

Eyesight:
Candidate must have good health and eye sight in general. Defective colour vision (colour blindness) NOT accepted.

Duration of Training and Course Fees:
The training is for 12 months and fees is approximately Rs.3,00,000/-(Approx. Rs. Three Lacs only) at present. Candidate to pay for these fees directly to the training institute. These fees once paid are not refundable at any stage either in full or part.

Selection Process:
Eligible candidates will be required to appear in the All India written Test at their own expenses and only candidates qualifying in the written test will be called for Personal Interview in the ratio of 1:3 (3 candidates called against 1 vacancy) keeping the provision of reservation for SC/ST/OBC in view. Management reserves the right to shortlist the candidates for written test also. The date of written examination shall be subsequently intimated.

Test Centre:
The written test will be held at Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai as mentioned in the online application. Candidates will have to choose one test centre, preference need to give to nearest centre from the list and the same cannot be changed after the form is submitted online. However, The Shipping Corporation of India reserves the right to cancel or add any test centre or change the centre chosen by the candidate.

About the Test:
The written test shall be of two (02) hours duration, which will be in the form of multiple choice questions (MCQs). Written test will focus on MCQs on Quantitative Aptitude, Professional Knowledge, English Language and Reasoning Ability. The questions of the test will be bilingual (English and Hindi).Candidate MUST PASS in each of the objective tests. The passing Marks in each test will be decided on the basis of the performance of all the competing candidates in each test.

Application Fees:
Rs.1000/- for General & OBC candidate’s and Rs.500/- for SC & ST candidate’s in the form of Demand Draft to be drawn in favour of The Shipping Corporation Of India Ltd, Mumbai, Payable at Mumbai.

Job Prospects:
After completion of training and obtaining MEO CLASS-IV PART “A” certificates of competency the candidates will join as junior Engineer in ship owned or operated by SCI, and will be made permanent after report with MEO CLASS-IV PART “B” certificate. After obtaining necessary sea experience and higher certificates of competence the candidate can rise to the rank of Chief Engineer officer on the ship.

As all communications and correspondence will be through emails/sms only.

b. The site will remain functional from 10:00 hrs of 28th June 2011 to 17:00 hrs of 15th July 2011. However, the candidates should complete the application at the earliest in order to avoid site congestion.

c. Candidates will have to apply for only once.

d. Detailed instructions for filling the form will be given under the "General Instructions" link. Candidates should read all instructions before filling online application form. The registration page will open by clicking the "Apply Online" link. Before applying, candidates should ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility criteria and norms mentioned in this advertisement.

e. Before starting to fill the online application form candidates should keep the demand draft for application fee and all personnel, and academic certificates ready with him / her.

f. Candidates must complete filling the form and submit the same online before 17:00 hrs of 15th July 2011 i.e. the last date for online application.

g. After submitting the online application form, candidates are required to download the Registration Slip generated and take a print-out of the same, paste the recent self attested passport size photo in the space indicated, put his/her signature in the place provided (sign.on photo should match)and send the same along with the enclosures (SSC/HSC Passing Certificate for birth proof, All semester mark sheets, Caste certificate, Caste Validity Certificate Demand Draft with name, address on backside etc.) only by Speed Post / Ordinary Post only (No Courier/Hand delivery) to the following address superscribing the envelop as application for "Trainee Marine Engineer Batch 2012”, Post Bag No.99, GPO Kolkata – 700001, West Bengal so that it reaches The Shipping Corporation Of India Ltd. on or before 22nd July, 2011.

Admit Card:
List of Candidates who are allowed to appear for the All India written examination will be given in the The Shipping Corporation Of India website. An Admit card of eligible candidate will be available on website to download before written examination. Admit cards will not be delivered to candidates home address and Candidate has to keep downloaded Admit Card only. All eligible candidates have to carry the same downloaded Admit Card along with their Photo ID Proof to the test centre without which they will not be allowed to appear in the test.

Interview Schedule:
List of candidates who are shortlisted for interview will be given in the website and they will be intimated about the time and venue separately by email. Similarly, the final list of selected candidates will also be given in the website and they will also be intimated about the Medical examination and joining date and other formalities.

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) is a company owned by the Government of India based in Mumbai that operates and manages vessels that services both national and international lines. SCI was established on October 2, 1961 by the amalgamation of Eastern Shipping Corporation and Western Shipping Corporation. Two more shipping companies, Jayanti Shipping Company and Mogul Lines Limited were merged with SCI in 1973 and 1986 respectively.
