About Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE)
The Graduate Aptitude Test is an all India Engineering test conducted by IIT (Indian Institutes of technology) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science). Both the institutes conduct the test alternately. The GATE is conducted annually for admission to Doctorate and Master level courses. A committee consisting of IIT and IISc coordinate the test on behalf of Govt of India, Dept. of Education and DATE which make up the National Coordinating Board.
Students are eligible for scholarships who qualify through the GATE exam. Gate is compulsory in some institutions. Candidates who qualify GATE are also eligible for Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR sponsored Projects and laboratories. Certain government posts require the candidate to have a GATE qualification for the post of Scientist and/or Engineer.
Students can apply for the gate in two ways, viz. Online and Offline. The fees for online application are eight hundred for General and OBC candidates and Rs. Four hundred for SC, ST and PD candidates. The fees for Offline application are Rs. One thousand and Rs. Five Hundred for General/OBC and SC/ST/PD candidates. Once the form is filled in accordance with the information brochure candidates need to send it to the Chairman of the GATE zone through Speed post or Registered Post.
In case of Online application candidates need to make a payment either through SBI or HDFC payment gateway. Offline payment is also possible through Demand Drafts. The candidates also need to get a digital photo and signature scanned which is used during the online application. SC/ST Certificate needs to be scanned as well. The Candidates can then fill up the online form which is available at www.get.iitm.ac.in and get a print out of the same.
