In the year of 1967-68, the Estimates Committee of Parliament kept proposal of conducting an examination for selection of candidates to fill the lower level posts in Government jobs. In response to this new Examination Wing was added in the former Secretariat Training School thus adding ‘Management’ word to its name.
ARC drew attention of Government to the issue that most of the staff in Government offices is working on lower levels and there must be some kind of recruitment board in order to recruit this staff instead of examination of unrelated subjects. This report made government to include a Subordinate Service Commission under an Executive Resolution. This commission was formed in 1975 which was later modified and renamed as Staff Selection Commission.
Staff Selection Commission is for recruitment of non-technical jobs like class C category. Now days function of this commission is being enlarged upto class B candidates with salary ranging from Rs. 9300 to 34800 with a grade pay of 42000. This new function came into picture from year 1999.
The setup of commission is very simple with a chairman who is assisted by two members and secretary. This secretary also works as a controller of examination. They are further supported by staff in other offices at lower level. There are various regional centers which are established to make the functioning more effective. Staff members from these offices are also responsible for different decisions taken by chairman.
Headquarter of the SSC is located at New Delhi. All the examinations and administrative matters are discussed and solution is found out by all the members. These issues are taken to the chairman through two members and secretaries. The large network of commission helps for better functioning of organization. Various functions like conducting workshops and sanction of Advancement of examinations etc are carried out by these offices.
